Tribute to Margaret Ayers

Margaret E Ayers

Dr. Margaret Ayers was a pioneer in the science of neurofeedback. During her life she successfully treated hundreds of patients who suffered from closed head injuries, learning disabilities, stroke, coma, and other disorders such as Autism. After leaving the employ of Dr. Barry Sterman, she developed equipment which gave “real time” digital EEG readings from the brain. This was essential to her work and success in treatment, which rests on the proven ability of the brain to learn to produce some frequencies and to inhibit others. She found that in patients with head trauma and psychological disorders, the brain was producing theta (4 – 7 Hz) frequencies in the area of the damage in phasic spikes or continuously. Individuals were trained to inhibit one frequency, 4 to 7 hertz, and following inhibition, produce 15 to 18 hertz.

She was the first person to open a private clinic specializing in neurofeedback, treating a host of difficult of conditions, from depression to level two coma. My research shows that she kept her office visit charges to around $45 per session, and treatments generally took 24 visits.

Please see her published reports on her clinical success using neurofeedback here:  http://www.neuropathways.com/publication.list.html

Margaret Ayers, Psychoneurophysiologist, was one of the first three pioneers in the field of Neurofeedback. She had been in full-time private practice in Beverly Hills since 1975 and was internationally renowned for her work with brain injury and in bringing patients out of coma, as well as in many other clinical applications of Neurofeedback.

After contacting over 250 people notifying them of her death, the prevailing comment stated by those called was, “My life changed for the better the day that I met Margaret Ayers.” She was a true prophet in her own land.

Gratefully, her work and legacy will continue. Her dear friend, companion and colleague, Dr. Penny Montgomery will continue, along with engineering support from Michael Wolff, to run Neuropathways EEG Imaging and to provide training.

A research fund has been established to further her work: “Margaret Ayers Research Fund” at 427 North Canon Drive, Suite 105, Beverly Hills, CA 90210. http://www.Neuropathways.com

I graduated with Margaret from Mt. Rainer High School in Des Moines WA, class of 1963. I still remember her gentle ways and her bright mind. I am proud to have known her and graduated with her.

  3. Thank you Nancy, for sharing your memory of her.

In her writing and reports you can see that she had incredible insight into the human brain, and was able to use it to help people with neurological problems.

As one who met Margaret at a major biofeedback confab in Los Angeles -Biltmore Hotel -mid 80″s including white papers and had met and investigated Les Femi”s Open Focus which is most effective .

I sought Margaret’s participation to develop a biofeedback computer mouse at the time mid 80’s to warn computer users of overuse and it being time to take a break away from the computer -stretch and rest period.

I discussed this opportunity with Margaret on several 5 occasions at her Beverly Hills office.

Margaret jerked me around and never pursued this valuable and worthwhile venture for which at the time I needed not only a bit of her knowledge but some small investment capital 50-100k, therefore discouraged by my time wasted with her -it never occurred .

NOW LOOK WHAT IS GOING ON IN THE WAY OF APPLE’S SMART WATCH, GOQii, AND ALL THE OTHER WEARABLES OF TODAY AND TOMORROW!!!!!!!

TOO BAD SOMEONE SO BRILLIANT SHOWED SO LITTLE BRILLIANCE WHEN IT CAME TO SUCH A WORTHWHILE ENDEAVOR -MID 80’S !!!

    SORRY SHE IS GONE

I JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT HER DEATH IN THAT I GOOGLED HER AND LOOKED FORWARD TO SEEING HER TO DISCUSS THE LOST OPPORTUNITY AND POSSIBLE VENTURES FOR THE FUTURE…
